GREECE – ATHENS: PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION

GREECE – ATHENS: PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION in the framework of cooperation between OMBEiK and other institutions

In cooperation with the Jagiellonian University’s Centre for Multimodal Educational and Cultural Research (OMBEiK), the Malopolska Cogiteon Science Centre (MCN Cogiteon), the Zygmunt Mineyka Polish School at the Polish Embassy in Athens and the Polish Archaeological Institute at Athens (PIAA), dr Anna Włodarczyk’s seminar group had the opportunity to carry out a training and research project entitled Interpretation Laboratory. Multisensory reception of cultural texts. (Pl. Laboratorium interpretacyjne. Multisensoryczny odbiór tekstów kultury). Cooperation with other university units, foreign partners and the social environment allowed for the exchange of valuable experience and supported the interdisciplinary research undertaken by the students. As a result, they could contribute to the research, teaching, organisational and popularisation tasks carried out at our Faculty already at the undergraduate level.

From 3 to 8 March 2023, students Ms Julia Niemczyk and Ms Magdalena Tomal had the unique opportunity to conduct research in the Greek capital. The research was aimed at collecting material that helped them to explore and bring closer various aspects pursued in their BA theses. Athens became the place where the students focused mainly on the search for artefacts related to the three most important Greek gods: Zeus, Poseidon and Hades. They also analysed the broadly understood, rich maritime aspects of Athens, both ancient and modern, including the remains of ancient piracy. They visited the Acropolis and numerous museums, including the Acropolis Museum and the National Archaeological Museum. On the other hand, they looked for nautical themes mainly in the port city of Piraeus.

The students also had the opportunity to experience the way a Polish school in Athens functions. They met with Year 8 students, with whom they discussed various topics linking Greek and Polish cultures. They also participated in the observation of a lesson on Sisyphus’ works (Pl. Syzyfowe prace – a novel by Polish writer Stefan Żeromski). They had the opportunity to attend a meeting with the teachers, where they learned more about the school itself, its patron and extra-curricular activities. In the following days, they were invited to the Greek school to talk to the headmaster and teachers about the Greek education system.

The project was made possible thanks to:

  • the hospitality of the Polish Archaeological Institute;
  • the inspiring meetings organised by the teachers of the Polish and Greek schools in Athens, supervised by the Principal Anna Sardis;

the coordination of the above-mentioned tour by the Promoter, dr Anna Włodarczyk
